Often we have seen yogis remain separate from the external world and remain solitary almost all their life. Maybe not all the time, even they stay with other yogis also, while some of them are living monastery life. Even when they stay together as Guru-Shisya life, they stay in ashrams.

Why Yogis Remain Solitary All Their Life?
But eventually, the question is why yogis remain solitary all their life? There can be many explanations given for this question. The answer to this question might be divided into several different parts. Usually, yogis remain separate from their family, friends, and worldly life and this is an ancient tradition in Hinduism. In the path of becoming real yogi, most of them remain ecstatic yet solitary all their life. This is what Yogis used to explore within their lifestyle.
For example, we have seen the life of great yogis like Paramahansa Yogananda, Adi Shankaracharya, and many more, every one of them suggested solitude or remain separate from family. The reason they suggest is the ultimate path of yoga is nothing but soul liberation.
There are many reasons we can focus on remaining alone. Even though not every one of us lives a yogic life still creating a detachment from the world life brings colossal self-questioning within yourself. Focusing on self can be greatly understood if we remain separate from usual busy family life.
Focusing On an Individual Life
To remain joyful and peaceful comes easily while you try to focus on yourself. This creates an individual sense of an organized mind. An organized mind never feels a loneliness because you will find enormous time for exploring the inner beauty and the organization of mind.
Once your mind is organized you can achieve clarity or a proper direction towards whatever yogis want to achieve in life. it is true for any person’s life or any kind of life you lead in general within a short period.
The Eternal Truth of Time
Yogis used to utilize time or properly use or learn to use time keeps them one step ahead of us. Yogis often know the great usefulness of time. Understanding time means you have a direction. Once it goes we cannot roll it back.
We all have a very limited amount of time. If we understand this one truth we will gradually invest our time in what matters in life. Around the world few successful people understand the value of time. Even now also many of us usually dont give value of time. It comes back reverse for us.
Loneliness and Silence for a Yogi
While yogis remain in lone warrior silence is a common phenomenon. Many times you might have to remain silent in life. Once yogis bring silence they practice it in two different ways. That is physically silence and mentally silence.
You can be physically silent for days but your mind roams around everywhere. This is not real silence. Sometimes within yourself, you create a role-play of talking to others which is not the real form of solitude.
Enjoying silence is habitual with yogis. It means a yogi is used to be better organized. Even physical silence also creates a great impact in Sadhana or whatever yogis prepare for achieving the ultimate realization.
Yogis Towards The Path of Liberation
What is the actual meaning of being alone? Being alone means you have to be living a solitary life in mind at least. When you stay mentally alone it is an overall way of distinguishing the real self from others.
Physically alone can separate you from the regular mixing of culture, words, habits, etc. but mentally alone means your mind is gradually becoming thoughtless. This is always a challenge for yogis. This is the reason yogis used to stay away from a crowded or noisy place or from family, where a lot of external attachment comes.
Understanding the Ultimate Goal
Yogis achieve their goal with multiple phases within the Sadhana.
The first phase of understanding the ultimate goal is to control thoughts and emotions. Once you take care of your thoughts and emotions the rest of the things in the path of realization comes into place.
The second phase of understanding is controlling your ‘Ripus’ or ‘Enemies within’. There are six ‘Ripus’ that exist within the human body. They are
- Kaama: Lust
- Krodha: Anger
- Lobha: Greed
- Moha: Infatuation
- Mada: Wine
- Matsarya: Jealousy
All these ripus essentially takes the external charge of our habits. And our habits bring karma. Once your karma is clean it will bring great effect on the path of Sadhana.
The third phase is rising or growing up above your personal liking or disliking. This means like or dislikes things comes when you have opinions and prejudice. This must be avoided by any means by yogis.
The Real Meaning of ‘Ekantabasa’
Ekantabasa means you are staying separate from your personal attachments. Ekantabasa is not only for growing up inside for your well-being but it is essentially is an assimilation of three things.
This is nicely explained by a great Yogi Sri Aurobindo. He often mentions Ekantabasa brings detachment from the external world. He mentioned three steps for the real meaning of Ekantabasa which is withdrawal from the external world. It is more than withdrawing your senses.
Next is immersion, which is a form of being ecstatic within yourself or in your thoughts, words whichever Sadhana you are practicing.
The third idea he explained is to rise up. This fundamentally keeps your inner soul to reach a height that is good for yourself as well as good for others, called ‘Bahujana Sukhaya, Bahujana Hitaya’.
Exploring New Possibilities
Once Yogi Practice to remain separate and stay alone in the path of Sadhana there is a huge possibility to explore new things. For a liberating soul, it is not necessary to explore various places or people.
It means you can achieve how to concentrate or focus on the Creator. Still, now less than a percent is known to us so it is important to know about self. This is the reason yogis possess the power to focus or clarity or attract and the list goes on.
Personal Transformation
Once Yogi focuses on the inner self, the life of the yogi starts transforming the life. to become a real yogi they stay unconditionally alone. This gives Yogi to utilize silence and the time to achieve a proper direction for reaching the ultimate self.
Often many yogis roam in the Himalayas. It is the mysterious place for all yoga to happen in the world. Most of them seek transformation in their yogic life.
Scary but Curious
The path of Sadhana is quite scary if you follow it properly from the outside dimension. Yogi used to achieve various yogic powers in their Sadhana. Some possess hypnosis, some occult practice through Tantra Sadhana, etc, yet these powers come with the transformation.
Sometimes many of us become frightened and scary seeing these powers. But for a real yogi, gradually they understand these powers bring enormous responsibility. The curiousness sometimes diverts the path from the Sadhana.
Instead, they will come busy exploring the powers not reaching the ultimate goal. This is explained by Paramahansa Sri Ramakrishna as “once you ask God for money to build a house for practicing Sadhana he grants you a nice house, once you get the house and money you forget who has granted everything that is God and you become busy with the money and the house. Slowly you become a family person and reaching the God or understanding the God is a matter of big distance”.
Conclusion
So finally we can think anybody can be a yogi if consciously you can resolve yourself. only when you invest enough time to remain in Sadhana and solitude then loneliness will be an enjoyment. A better-organized person inside has possibilities of becoming a real yogi, who is not only physically alone but also mentally alone. A real yogi can stay without any external influence of family, friends, relations nothing can gradually achieve whatever yogi thirsts for.
